Glimpses: Identity and values

There is a lot of discussion about identity – how we manage it, how we form it, how many we have!

In this section we look at the key drivers behind the many different ‘hats’ that we wear and how we use our identity in different situations.  What is the future of national identity in the UK? How does our identity influence our lifestyle? Is it driven by our peer-group, is identity an important part of our ‘wellbeing’?

The chapters each tackle a different element of ‘identity’ – the trends driving it, how it might change and what it all means.

  • Is conspicuous consumption over or just changed – understanding how consumption defines our identity
  • Changing perception of our role within our family
  • How work continues to define our identity and our social network
  • Is national identity driven by political affiliation?
  • As we move in ever-decreasing-circles will local identity see a resurgence of importance?
  • Does ethnic identity supersede national identity?
  • The rise in ‘spirituality’ and greater demand for ‘traditional’ faiths are changing the nature of religious identity.
  • How our ‘core values’ of freedom, authenticity, happiness and improvement define our identity.
  • Fairness and fragmentation – two defining features of social identity?
